This set of works came in a short span right after I stepped away from the heavy weight of my computer graphics business. I had time and clarity to dig into the images that I had been imagining. Travel was a big motivator as was my abiding interest in using portals as a way to show the further potential in any experience of a place. If we are located and perceiving where we are, then it’s natural to think of what’s next. For me, a doorway open or closed is that.
The image of the Buddha in the forest was also strong as is evident in several of the scenes. Trips to Thailand, New Zealand and Europe yielded these scenes which led directly to my animated shorts.
One the production front, this is when I really began to develop my sense of how I wanted to composite and use nature with abandoned artifacts, doorways and textures.
